This pivotal New Testament letter of 1 Corinthians was written to a young church that the Apostle Paul had planted in the city of Corinth during his second missionary journey.  Surrounded by the influences of pagan Greek philosophy and sexual immorality, the believers at Corinth struggled to disentangle themselves from the world and move on to maturity in Christ.  Tragically, their sinful pride had led to misguided allegiances and an imprudent dependence on human wisdom.   Divisions soon formed, threatening to fracture the church from within and undermine its witness before a watching world.   In this terse letter, Paul confronts these issues head on – providing practical answers to questions regarding morality, marriage, food offered to idols, the Lord’s Supper, spiritual gifts, stewardship and the resurrection.   Paul’s message to the Corinthian church serves as a timely reminder that we all must seek to honor God by submitting to His Word, walking in His Spirit, and living out our faith through His power and grace.
